2015 Victorian Open – day 6 men’s
This is how champions roll – all the way into the Victorian Open men’s singles final.
Former Australian Open title-winner Nathan Wilson and 2013 Victorian Open men’s champion Wayne Roberts will face off in fine form on Friday after both won their quarter and semi-finals on Thursday.
Wilson took out Shepparton’s two remaining men’s hopes in successive matches. First he beat Mitch Sidebottom 21-13, then beat Sidebottom’s Shepparton Golf teammate Matthew Robertson 21-15.
Roberts was in deft touch to see off two young guns – Essendon’s Jay-Bye Norris 21-12, and Melbourne BC youngster Curtis Hanley 21-10.
State under 18 rep Hanley entered the match in great form, and didn’t bowl badly on the big stage.
But Roberts was in sublime form, and just kept delivering quality bowls to finish the Katamatite teenager’s breakthrough tournament singles campaign.
Hanley still has the chance for a Victorian Open title on Friday, teaming with brother Cain to win through to the men’s pairs final in a nail biting semi on Thursday.
The Hanleys narrowly accounted for experienced Bendigo East pair Brad Marron and Marc Smith 13-12 in their semi.
There they’ll play Rob Dixon and Neil Jebb of Clayton, who are also in great form.
Dixon, who’s been strong in various disciplines throughout the event, teamed with Jebb to beat Jayden Christie and Michael Sims 14-8 in their semi.
In the men’s triples final, Barry Anset (Bendigo), Dennis McHarry (Shepparton RSL) and Geoff Frantz (East Shepparton) will play City of Echuca trio Wayne Brooks, Phillip Thorn and Matthew Liverton.
Anset and team accounted for singles finalist Roberts, Ray Lawerson and Alan Dove (Yarraville-Footscray) 14-11 in the semis, while Liverton and his trio beat John Attwood, Glenn Thatcher and Simon Carter.
